Laundry conundrum

What I hate about this place the most is that having a maid to make your bed, wash your clothes and dishes and make you scrambled eggs and muffins in the morn is just too expensive. Apparently there's this rather expensive minimum wage thing they have in place. And some law about slavery.
Thank god we have a dishwasher.
If you mentioned front-loader to me, I picture Kenwood 50W sound systems, hooked up to two 15-inch Rockford amps. Alas, front- and top-loaders refer to our washing machine and tumble dryer.
But I seriously have very little idea how to use it. I actually had to call my mom to ask her. And at almost $2 a minute from the useless Bell phone card the office got us, there was no time for chit-chat and "How you doing?" crap.
All I need to know - do I use hot, warm or cold water? And what do all the other signs mean? And how long do I put them in the tumble dryer for? And on the clothing label, which is the sign for dry cleaning, and which is the tumble dryer symbol - the circle, or triangle or what?
